I am probably in the best shape I've ever been in but I haven't raced. I was so nervous at the start my hands were absolutely jumpy. I haven't run a 400 for seven months so I was just petrified.

I haven't thought about that. The guys from last year, I see them ... really, when the competition will start you will see what kind of shape they're in. They look good now, but they haven't wrestled yet. They haven't got an elbow in the face. A kick in the butt. A slash on the ankle. But it's coming.

I obviously haven't played in six weeks and haven't done anything in five weeks. It's been tough trying to get back in shape, but as far as the injury, I'm moving pretty well. I'm just not in shape right now. My goal from the start was to get to the playoffs healthy. Absolutely. I think the consistency, or lack thereof -- where we are at this moment is not where you'd like to be after three games. We haven't done little things across the board. Everyone likes to discuss what we haven't done at quarterback, but we could talk a little bit about all the way down the line, where we need to get a lot better. We need to get a lot better fast, because when you start playing against the Big Ten defenses, yards and first downs and points are even more difficult. So we've got a lot of work to do and we've just got to get at it.

I've raced harder this year than I've ever raced before. You think you're doing all you can. I've always felt like I've given 100 percent, but you're put in certain situations and you find you're capable of doing more. Hopefully, I still haven't realized my full potential. I feel like I've got a lot to learn and as a driver I can get a lot better and each year I understand there's more to me than I even thought I had.

I would say the outlook for the fourth quarter remains pretty strong, but the fact that they haven't actually confirmed that with a hard number is making the stock a bit jumpy.

My heart is there, and they know I was trying to get there, but I just can't. At this point I haven't thrown to a batter yet. It's really difficult. I haven't even thrown a breaking ball here. I'm still wondering about my toe. It's really difficult. There's no time. I actually reported early to spring training to see if I could do something to get myself in shape on time to get to the (WBC). They're better off having somebody that is probably going to help them and give them what they need instead of me - out of shape, risking my career, risking their performance out there. It's going to be a tough competition. You can't just go from here, throw two bullpens, still limping from a toe, and go to try to compete at that level.
