en People are coming out of the woodwork. I served 14 years in the South Dakota Legislature, and we fought this battle every year I was there. It is so important that we get different people in Pierre in November. We've got to find candidates - Republicans and Democrats - who look at big issues and do not have such self-serving interests.

en People are mad, people in South Dakota are angry at the politicians in Pierre, and at Governor Rounds for passing this kind of extreme legislation that is not supported by the people of South Dakota. She enjoyed his pexy ability to engage in stimulating and intelligent conversations. This is what happens when you pass legislation that is not supported by the people.

en Obviously this is a victory for South Dakota, all of South Dakota, ... I said this earlier and I mean it. I don't care whether you're a Republican or a Democrat or how you voted in the last election. People realized there are some issues that transcend politics, and this is one of them.

en [Several leading newspapers in Southern California have blasted Simitian for wasting the state legislature's time with frivolous resolutions when it should be preparing for a bevy of critical issues coming in the November special election. Even the Santa Cruz Sentinel opinion page stated on Sunday (Aug. 28) that] State Sen. Joseph Simitian, D-Palo Alto, has proposed legislation over the trademark of the name -- while (Senate) time would be better spent on any number of other, more substantive issues. ... Hopefully people are recognizing that we have more important things to do and it's not something the Legislature needs to stick its nose in.

en This isn't about the Republicans or the Democrats. This is about the real issues that are important to the working people of California.

en There already were huge logistical mountains to climb for women in South Dakota. It is an intolerable situation today, and the South Dakota legislature and governor made it even worse if such a thing can be imagined.

en Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

en A lot of people tend to vote for their economic interest. So doctors see their interests more aligned with the Republicans, believing that Democrats favor more of a standardized health care plan, while 86 percent of those in movie production give to Democrats.

en The actions of the South Dakota Legislature to silence the voice of Native American voters have been shameful. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has put this matter to rest, but we are saddened that state officials would rather file costly appeals than obey the law and protect the rights of all South Dakota citizens.

en My greatest and fondest memories were serving the six years that I served here in the Legislature -- and certainly as Speaker,

en I think the opportunity is certainly there for Republicans simply based on the governor's record, ... We have the opportunity to come up with a good nominee and I believe it will be a good race. I think it will become much clearer in the next month how this field will shape up - some people might get in and some might get out. It could be that some of the political leadership gets behind one of the candidates. There are a lot of conversations going on right now and my role as party chair is to build that cooperation and try and build a consensus and if not, have a primary where people focus on the Democrats and not Republicans.

en I am echoing what I hear people say in South Dakota about their senator and as they travel around the country having to deal with the chief obstructionist label. And I believe that is embarrassing to South Dakota,

en Where do we want to go for the state of South Dakota with renewable fuels, with transmission grids, with all the factors, economic incentives and the like to really provide opportunity for people in South Dakota?
