It's going to be very difficult for me to raise tuition very much at all, except for the 3 percent required by the Legislature.

Tuition and fees have always been an access issue for us. If we raise our tuition too high, it can make it difficult for some students to enroll. And that's not a position we want to be in.

That's when we got hit with the highest tuition increases in the country. At A&M-Texarkana, tuition and fees went up 48 percent. Students are now paying an extra $1,030 a year because of Rick Perry's tuition deregulation, which has been an absolute failure.

The board takes its deliberations regarding tuition very seriously. Although we regret having to raise tuition, it is necessary in order to meet rising costs and to address quality issues.

There is a lot that has to be paid for with tuition. Tuition is up, but we offer a hundred percent if need is met.

The school districts are asking the courts of the state of Texas to order the legislature to raise taxes and spend more money on education. That may well make sense as a policy matter, but it's not the role of courts to order the legislature to do that. Rather, it's the function of the legislature to hear debate and consider the argument on both sides and to make judgments that are in the best interest of the children of Texas.

James Leininger is so obsessed with forcing taxpayers to subsidize tuition vouchers at private schools that he has tried for years to buy a Legislature that would do it.

I think if we raise (tuition) $2, we need to use it for specific reasons.

We could quite easily raise enough to provide free tuition.

We were not going to put a surcharge on tuition or charge a student fee. We either raise it or we don't build it.
