We've got too many comic strip corpses being propped up and passed for living by new cartoonists who ought to be doing something of their own. If a cartoonist isn't good enough to make it on his own work, he has no business being in the newspaper.

en I've backed off cliffs all of my career. The best things I've done I've backed into. I never understood what I was getting into, I never started out to be a political cartoonist. There wasn't this kind of cartoonist when I started. I wanted to do traditional strips in the newspapers and backed into what I did then and backed into writing plays and backed into children's books. And what I'll back into next, I don't know, but I'll be looking forward to going backward.

en What you want to do here is study a problem that has been studied and studied and studied to death.

en It all started after high school when we would take different surf trips and learn about different cultures. I never studied it formally, but I learned a lot during my visits.

en It took six months to write. It's not a hugely popular article on the site, but it was the most fascinating thing I've ever studied. It's amazing how intricate we are -- I learned so much.

en It remains to be seen whether or not this will be helpful for the entire population before we make a statement about this. But it is being studied, it has been studied, and we're waiting for the results of that study to be completed ... hopefully within the next couple of years.

en A lot of the kids coming here for this have never studied written music. They've learned to play guitar and write songs, but if I asked them to play a C7 chord with a flatted 9th, most of them wouldn't know how. At the end of one year, they will.
