We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We asked the citizens if they would support a pool, and they didn't. We have to move on with better ideas. It only happens with money. If you don't have the money, it can't move forward.

Military bases were damaged that need to be repaired. Those levees (in New Orleans) need to be repaired, so the Army Corps of Engineers is going to need money, ... There's highway money that's going to be needed for all the interstates that have been damaged. There are damages to the wildlife refuges down there.

At a time when Hurricane Katrina has raised the veil on the ugly specter of American inequality, it's wrong to pull so much money out of the federal budget to benefit a few members of the super-rich.

There's a lot of investment money out there right now. People really have done well the past four or five years and they recognize that northern Colorado is going to keep growing. So there is a lot of commercial building out there that is attracting investment money.

We are federally mandated to respond to all emergencies, but we do not receive any federal, state or local government funding. We've sent all of our money out of state to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, so we are in a big financial crunch right now.
