I felt going into those playoffs that we hadn't thrown the ball very well and for us to make a run we had to throw the ball better. This year, coming into the playoffs, I think it was reversed. We had thrown the ball much better, but we had to run the ball more efficiently.

Josh is working with Pat, and he could be even better next season. He's working really hard. He consistently throws his fast ball in the 84 to 86 miles per hour range. He has thrown it once at 87, and the other pitchers are close to that.

We're going to have the ball in our hands a lot on offense this season, because that defense of ours is as stout as any team's in this league. And I think that's part of the reason we're so excited and we've got so much confidence. This team works hard. We're just looking forward to getting the season started.

I don't want to discount that as the only reason but it certainly contributed. Their (Arizona State's) offense is pretty good. They've always thrown the ball extremely well. The quarterback threw some balls into receivers that were covered very well. There were two opportunities to get picks that went right through our hands. This is only the beginning of a 14-race season for us, and the fact that we finished 13th in class means we'll go home with 18 championship points that we wouldn't have if we'd have just quit. Everyone, our engineer Kyle (Brannan) and the crew chief, Terry (Wilbert), the whole crew just dealt superbly with anything and everything that was thrown at them, and let me tell you, everything got thrown at them.

That is called, you see that called, ... It was close. It was close to the boundary. If Steve had thrown the ball, it would have not been an issue. Had he thrown the ball, it definitely would have been called.

He has outstanding ball skills. He's a smart player. He anticipates well. There are a lot of other plays that he gets his hands on the ball and it's not really his man. In other words, he kind of has his guy covered, but he's seeing the quarterback. He sees the ball thrown and then he breaks on the ball . . . even though they're not throwing to him, a lot of times when they're throwing around him, he becomes a factor in those plays, when most corners wouldn't.

I haven't thrown to a hitter, yet. I haven't thrown a breaking ball.
