Citigroup's acquisition of Golden ordsprog

Citigroup's acquisition of Golden State was an outlier in what was otherwise another slow quarter for bank and thrift mergers. Deal activity, as measured in number of deals, was up modestly from an abysmal first quarter. We expect this trend will continue.

While bank and thrift deal activity remains depressed, the pace picked up considerably at the end of the quarter. Whether this is the beginning of a resurgence remains to be seen.

Earnings here are sufficiently strong that we will maintain the level of strength we've achieved. It's a very opportune time for mergers and acquisition deals and this activity will continue throughout the whole year.

Economic activity in the first quarter clearly picked up from the previous quarter and the trend that was reached should more or less hold in the second quarter. However, that means that the expected acceleration did not occur.

We continue to believe that the first quarter will be the toughest quarter for online advertising. We expect market growth of only 10 percent year-over-year. We believe growth will then accelerate modestly through the year.

The important thing, though, (it that) it's a January number. So we ended the fourth quarter on 1.1% GDP growth, but now, starting the next new quarter, we're going to have this surge in housing activity. And it's going to add to GDP estimates for the first quarter.

Clearly we are not going to match last year's fourth quarter. This really pushes a lot of deals into first quarter, which usually gets off to a slow start.

Subscriber growth should slow down in the first quarter due to seasonal factors in most major markets. We expect 4.8 million net additions in the quarter, down 50.4 percent quarter-over-quarter and 8.2 percent year-over-year.

We are encouraged by the order activity we have seen thus far in our fiscal first quarter and expect that revenue in the quarter could increase by as much as 10 percent from our fiscal 2002 fourth quarter,

German employers are saying they will begin to add employees again, albeit modestly, and hiring activity in Japan should be vigorous, beyond what we normally see in the second quarter -- their peak hiring season. Chinese employers say they will reduce their hiring activity compared to last year at this time, while U.S. employers expect to add to their payrolls at a continued steady pace.

I think Golden State was amenable to doing something that was fair and generous and allowing for flexibility on both sides ....
