It's kind of a holiday snoozer, ... All of the big players have locked in their gains for this year. It's just going to be quiet with exaggerated movements because of low volume this week.

Today wasn't much of a day. There was a lot of positive news and the economic data was good, but the reaction was a very quiet, almost muted one. Tomorrow may be even quieter in terms of volume as we approach the end of this holiday-shortened week.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

I wouldn't discount the likelihood that next week will be flat to lower. It's a holiday week, volume will be light, and after four up weeks we'll need a pause.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

Following channel checks with the Las Vegas Strip operators over the last two weeks, we remain encouraged that the overall volume of high-end gaming play improved over last year. The MGM-Mirage properties and Caesars Palace appear to have played lucky for the holiday period while Wynn Las Vegas' hold may have been soft over the New Year's week, but should be normal for the quarter.

The market's had a pretty good run this week, in terms of volume and gains, and I think coming in this morning, there was the potential to build on that rally if the jobs report was a blowout.

It's good for the players to be involved ... but only up to the semifinals. Then I want them to take a nice week's holiday during the final. I have told the players that, but I don't think they are going to listen to me.

Trading is rather quiet this week because of Columbus Day and the Jewish holidays. You often see big swings in prices when the volume is low. Also, gasoline is close to $1.80, which is probably a little overboard in spite of the fall in demand.

Those sales are also concentrated around some key national holidays, including the Golden Week annual Japanese holiday, which falls this year from April 29 to May 5, and the Labor Holiday week in China from May 1 to May 9. But sales could reduce significantly from the shortfall of tourists.
