en For us, Easter has new meaning than it ever did in the past. I was the skeptic when it came to this kind of thing. I want people to know that if, like me, they have a place in their lives that feels empty, there is hope. All they have to do is take that all important, seemingly treacherous step to give their lives over spiritually. I know now, even when I was out there doing my own thing, God was looking after me.

en It's important to me that my music touches lives. Not everybody is Christian, but one thing people do have in common is that we all have struggles. We all have issues. We all have tragedies. I feel music should be there to heal, to give you a direction and give you hope. That's what I'm about.

en It doesn't matter if it's in my class or around the world, anywhere, the first thing I say is "First of all guys, I want to give my Heavenly Father credit for all I do and the Lord Jesus Christ to give me the opportunity to go out and reach and save lives." To me, that's the most important thing.

en They haven't gotten to that point where baseball is the most important thing in their lives. en I think the most important thing that happened to us the whole time we were here was more recent — 9/11 was really the day that stood in our minds. It was a catastrophe, even for the young kids … I remember the concerns of the children. I think it kind of reflected how the parents felt. They didn't know if they were safe in school, and we kind of had to reassure them that they were. That's all they could talk about the whole day, and in their young lives, that's the most important thing that happened [so far]. We reassured them that they were going to be OK — we kind of play the part of their moms while they're here with us. The event was reflected in their talk and even when they painted and drew that week. They drew tall buildings.

en The story the Leavers have been enacting for the past three million years isn’t a story of conquest and rule. Enacting it doesn’t give them power. Enacting it gives them lives that are satisfying and meaningful to them. This is what you’ll find if you go among them. They’re not seething with discontent and rebellion, not incessantly wrangling over what should be allowed and what forbidden, not forever accusing each other of not living the right way, not living in terror of each other not going crazy because their lives seem empty and pointless, not having to stupefy themselves with drugs to get through the days, not having a new religion every week to give them something to hold on to, not forever searching for something to do or something to believe in that will make lives worth living. And – I repeat – this is not because they live close to nature or have no formal government or because they’re innately noble. This is simply because they’re enacting a story that works well for people – a story that worked well for three million years and that still works well where the Takers haven’t yet managed to stamp it out.
