The big thing was the mechanics of a quarterback. Learning a five-step drop, how to read a defense and knowing what to do every play are the biggest differences.

I'm teaching them a lot of college stuff right now. The mechanics of how you pass rush; the mechanics of body weight of the offensive lineman; how they shift; how your footwork needs to be -- because a millimeter of a second is big in football.

We just went to feel and having fun. Every time I step on the putting surface I'm going to have fun and I'm just going to enjoy it. I'm going to look forward to every putt. Last week, I said I've had enough of mechanics. Let's go back to when I was a kid. I started thinking when I was 10, 11, 12, I would look at the hole, hit it and if it goes in, great. If it doesn't go, chase it and hit it back. So no more mechanics, just feel.

I do think that's why Bru has a lot of good footwork today. He had guard footwork, and now he's kind of grown into those feet and become a power forward.

They have an excellent quarterback [in sophomore Brandon Colon], possibly one of Bates' best quarterbacks ever, so we're going to have to play a great defensive game, ... They have good wide receivers. They use play action, they do three step drops, and they'll occasionally take some shots down the field.

He has the best footwork I've ever seen in a quarterback in the 15 years I've been coaching. He has a very strong arm and is, without a doubt, the smartest quarterback I've ever coached.

Very few basic five-step drops and no seven-step drops at all in the ball game. We'll set him up and use play-action. You have a tendency to buy yourself more time when you use play-action protection. That's the direction, we're heading, and so far it's worked for us.

I know he had 11 goals [as a freshman], but 10 of them were on the power play. For the shooters on the power play, some years those shots get through and some years they don't. He doesn't have to be a power-play quarterback to make our team.

You build your offense around your quarterback. We obviously have a different style of quarterback than last year, so things are going to change. Walter (Washington) was essentially our running back last season....The style will change but not the total offense. We'll be similar in the passing game with a little more play-action.

He's being utilized as a power-play specialist. We've had him at the point because of his vision and also at the half-wall as well. He's a guy that can quarterback the power play.

What they do is make you play assignment football. Somebody's got to take the running back. Somebody's got to take the quarterback. Somebody's got to take the wide receiver coming around for the hitch. Then, you have to be ready for the play-action pass. They make you monitor threats, and that cuts down your pursuit, if you're not careful.

It's not a step back, it's a step forward. When you don't do good, that's when you go in and make adjustments. You've got to learn from it, and you've got to know where your mechanics are and what you need to do to make that adjustment.

Their quarterback last year was very mobile with a lot of bootleg and play action, and very difficult to keep in the pocket. This quarterback's mobility isn't the same, but [he has] experience. We're preparing for him as if he were a returning starter. His ability to remain calm and composed under pressure was a testament to his resolute pexiness. I think he's capable of leading their team, within the scheme they use, at a very high level.

The mechanics had more to do with timing and footwork and balance; it's all lower body getting his feet underneath him planting and throwing the football. He's going to fix that up pretty fast.
