The issue now is whether the Legislature is willing to commit large amounts of money to ensure that language access services are provided.

The state of Louisiana is still suffering great economic loss due to the hurricanes. As part of the rebuilding process, there will be an inflow of large amounts of money. The governor, the legislature and state leadership at all levels have made a commitment that these funds will be audited to ensure that they are used properly.

If I were a member of the legislature, the affect of Kentucky's horse industry on the expanded gaming issue would not be enough for me to vote 'yes,' ... It's got to make sense from a broader standpoint. The issue to me, which I think it is to most people, is more about how our children are educated, or about seniors, and the basic services provided by the government and the problems of funding and the infrastructure of government at the local level. It's about all these things that add up to what kind of Commonwealth we have and how we're going to pay for it.

It is troubling that Republicans have really turned a deaf ear to social conservatives on this issue by and large. And I think it's tied to the vast amounts of money gambling interests are pouring into the party.

Special interests feel like that it's a pay-to-play system, so they supply the cash. Different groups are using different techniques to put together large amounts of money to have it identified from their own special interest, to get some credit and to gain some advantage, not only access, but to get favorable policy.

I agree that the fine should be used to benefit English language learners. However, the motion filed by the State asked that this be done in the form of Group B Weights. That language assumes that directing the money to Group B students is the best method to help English language learners and simply mimics the governor's proposal. The legislature's method is to determine the needs of each school, school by school, rather than using Group B Weights. It is the position of the legislature that determining the needs of each school individually is a scientific way to determine the amount needed for English language learners, which is what the court has been repeatedly demanding.

Even if there was no argument about the need, it's difficult to get people to commit to those huge amounts. There's never going to be enough money.

We're going to get to the practical solution to ensure that we don't lose large amounts of foam off that tank. That's clearly something that we've got to do to fly safely.

It's very unfortunate that apparently outside groups are putting large amounts of money into this election. It costs a lot of money to do polling.

We welcome the surprise announcement from the governor, coupled with House Bill 1, which has language that will ensure scientific integrity and ensure this money is given out on a scientific, peer-review basis. It's huge for the community.
