It would be nice if we had something here in the North Country where there were enough good jobs, good paying jobs, so that our youngsters when they graduated would have an option. They wouldn't have to stay here but they would have an option to stay if they so chose.

On the state level some of the industries that New Jersey has been particularly strong in, such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications, are the very industries that have suffered some real downturns in the last year or so. It's costing jobs, and good jobs. These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

People who have good jobs in supportive workplaces are more committed. They're more loyal, they're more likely to stay with their own jobs, they're more likely to give their all to their jobs, to care about their company succeeding.

A lot of them think they have to go to Charlotte and Columbia for good-paying jobs, but there are opportunities here if they decide to stay.

I am asking this Commission to explore every option for the 440th, and the people who have been displaced, ... All of us are disappointed by the Pentagon's decision to close the 440th. But the site still has enormous potential for the local economy, and we are determined to see that it gets put to use in a way that creates good paying jobs and contributes to the economy.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

I know that several of my friends and I have been anxiously awaiting to see 'Capote,' 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' 'North Country,' 'Mrs. Henderson Presents,' etc. etc.. Can you tell us why these films go to (and stay) at certain North Side theaters?

The public sector certainly includes the Department of Labor. Those are jobs that are available. They are open and they are good paying jobs. The government as a whole has been actually retrenching under President Clinton's leadership.
