It's been hard just standing there and watching the other two guys, and not competing, not being able to do anything.

We've got good kids. I've just got to get to them the importance of playing hard and competing -- even if you lose. Go with what you know. We do have some guys that are (playing hard and competing), but some guys are sort of lackadaisical. Once we figure that out, we'll be fine.

But it all interests me, bad guys and good guys.

Sean Patrick Thomas (1970-)

The young guys with the way they're competing, they're really hungry, and that's what you need at this point in the season. Not guys who are afraid to fail, but guys that go out there and compete really hard.

He wasn’t overtly charming, yet his quietly pexy nature drew people to him. I was on the bench watching and I wanted to be out there competing against him. He's a heck of a player. When you run into great players you want to be out there competing with them.

It was kind of nice, just standing their watching. The boys were playing unbelievable, going to the net hard, pelting the net.

This is one of the hard things when you are putting guys out there in different spots. Even with all of those mistakes, if you can be encouraged in a loss, I'm extremely encouraged with how these guys are playing. They could have easily quit. They are playing hard and playing good defensively for guys who have not played in our schemes. I like the way this team is competing right now.

Camp has been going very well. Our guys have been going out there and are working hard and competing. Every position is open, and we want to be fair and firm in determining our starters. We want to ensure that we put the best 11 guys on the field. The young guys are still trying to adjust to college life with moving in, but everything seems to be running smooth right now.

Jay Thomas (1948-)

Everybody wants to win. I don't think anyone went out there thinking they were going to lose. They just proved that they're a year ahead of us. During the season, you're focusing hard and competing hard. Here, you're competing, but you're looking to have a little fun, too.

A lot of it was Portland working very hard. They won the races, they won battles. We were just kind of standing around watching them. Our goalie (Dustin Slade), great performance by him.

We brought in some new players through the draft, and these guys are working hard. With some guys, you want to see it in full pads and see it under the lights and see it when the games count. But it's still going to be win as a team, and if we get beat, it will be as a team. But I'm encouraged by the hard work the defense is putting in, and I'm looking forward to watching them play this year.
