The Fed officials are talking very optimistically. Uniformly they were out there, on the tape yesterday and in interviews, saying that they are expecting a second-half recovery and looking for signs of a bottom sometime, very soon in the economy. So, you are going to have to watch the news very carefully going forward. I don't think anybody really knows. But if you listen to the Fed, you have maybe one more rate cut and then an improving economy.

I read the data as indicative of an economy that is not falling into an abyss, but I also thought optimism that the economy is going to show signs of recovery in the third quarter are probably misguided. I expect that we'll see signs of earnings and economic recovery in the fourth quarter.

There is a recovery, it's doubtless under way. There are signs that indicate that the economy is improving.

The door being open for further rate cuts is bad news. We don't need further rate cuts, we need stability in the economy, ... We do care that we oversold yesterday and there's relatively positive news on the semiconductor front.

Today we got preliminary signs that the worst may be behind us. Usually a bounce in technology usually happens about six months ahead of convincing evidence of a market recovery. We're getting a rally in techs and good news on the economy. I think we may be seeing a classic market recovery ahead of an economic recovery.

The market has somewhat anticipated a half-point rate increase next week, so if they can see signs that the economy is slowing then the belief is that maybe the Fed will not have to do anything beyond the next meeting, and that maybe the worst of the rate raise is over.

We don't expect the economy or the storage market to show signs of a recovery until the second half of the year.

He also spoke optimistically about the economy, so the bond market is now pricing in a 100% chance of the Fed funds rate rising to 5%.

A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

Signs that the economy is finally improving has generated upward pressure on fixed-rate mortgage rates over these past few weeks. Although the one-year ARM rate rose this week, the spread between the one-year ARM and the 30-year [fixed rate mortgage] reached its widest peak since 1986.

The Japanese economy is turning around, as evidenced by the machine tool orders. If signs of growth in the economy continue, eventually they (Japan) will depart from the zero interest rate policy.

We do believe that it's a question of how the overall economy is faring. The atmosphere is improving, everyone's looking forward to a positive development of the economy and we do believe that the confectionary industry will benefit from this.

For recovery to have any real oomph, capital spending will need to rebound. So far there are no signs of that, and we don't expect a turn until the first half of next year. So in the near term, the economy will probably remain soft enough to justify at least one more Fed move.
