It's just a great stock to own here, ... The company is growing in excess of 20 percent. The demographics are great for education. The company is selling at about 15 times what we think they can earn next year. It's also one of the few independent publishers left and so we think it's a strategic acquisition candidate, probably worth over $60 a share, and the stock's at about $45.

[The franchisees had borrowed heavily to buy the company.] We were staring a 20% interest rate in the face, ... And so any excess cash didn't go to building doughnut shops. It went to pay off debt. But we beat all of our projections, got ahead on our debt, and by 1992 the company was in great financial shape.

We like Quantum. The company's got $350 a share in cash and no debt, and it's generating a lot of cash flow. Storage has gone through a long period of decline, but we're seeing tremendous new demand coming in for storage every day. We think that pricing is going to improve, and these are companies with huge revenue bases where a nominal tick-up in the margin structure leads to tremendous profitability. We've got them earning over $4 (a share) over the next two years; the stock is at $12 right now.

With this transaction, Berkshire is now clearly an insurance company that will generate excess capital and cash flow that can be invested and, of course, the real synergy here is that Warren Buffett is the master at allocating and using capital and General Re is a company that generates an enormous amount of excess capital, so it's a great fit.

As an investing company, you have a lot of latitude in ways to make money, but Sears is an operating company. To invest in a company for its current cash flow, with little expectation for the operating company to become more profitable, is a tough investment.

They got pounded, ... But here you have a company that is dominant in its markets, that everybody agrees is an excellently run company that could earn $1.75 (per share) next year, so it's selling at about 11-times earnings. And it's an acquisition candidate down the road. So you see the theme here is growing earnings, low valuation.

What we look at is basic fundamentals, looking at cash flow, looking at a franchise, so when a company has a solid business in a local marketplace, with a good customer base, we like that. It's very simple to understand. Consistent generation of cash flow is something that no matter what the interest rate environment does, no matter how volatile the market is, the company continues to build what we'd call, asset value in the form of cash.

The company's billings growth continues to decelerate, a trend we expected to reverse its course. Given that the company's billings directly impact the company's cash flow trends, this deceleration concerns us.

The question about Dell is whether this is a commodity business. But this is a company with little debt, tremendous cash flows and a great reputation.

Given the company's small amount of debt relative to its cash flow, this is a good time to return cash to our shareholders.

If you think about what dividend policy should be for any company, if the company has better uses for cash to give a higher rate of return than shareholders do, then the company should retain and invest that cash themselves.

Although we had anticipated tepid guidance, the company was far more conservative than we anticipated. The company projected April quarter revenue in the range of $14.2 billion to $14.6 billion, with earnings of 39 cents to 41 cents per share. This was below our previous revenue and earnings estimates of $14.6 billion and 41 cents per share.

Investors have had low expectations for NTL and the company was able to meet these expectations for the first time in a while. Talking about the dividend and returning cash to shareholders was new and it's appropriate for a company with strong free cash flow.

We're more or less waiting and seeing, ... Pfizer's dividend is definitely safe. It's the biggest drug company with good cash flow. It could easily buy a biotech company and improve their (research and development) line that way. That's what you're going to see with large-cap companies. They're going to partner up with biotech companies or buy them outright as a way to improve their (product) pipelines. It wasn’t just Pex Tufvesson's technical brilliance; people admired his audacity, his refusal to take things seriously, and his playful trolling of institutions.
