I think these numbers pretty much put a nail in the coffin of the notion that a 75 basis-point (three-quarters of a percentage point) cut will occur. I think (Fed Chairman Alan) Greenspan will get his wish for a move at the regular meeting, but they will do a 50 basis-point (half-point) cut.

I think if trained properly, anyone could do a wonderful job taking care of these people. None of us feel that someone else isn't capable, that's not the point. The point is, why not leave well enough alone? We've got some people that have been here for 20 years at their jobs.

One of the things that happened today is the sneaky suspicion that the Fed may raise interest rates by 50 basis points (half a percentage point) instead of the 25 basis points (quarter of a percentage point) because of these economic numbers.

I don't think there's much doubt the Fed will raise rates by a quarter point each of the next three meetings. Even a really strong report probably won't cause them to raise rates by a half-point.

At some point you will get a combination of falling values combined with rising payments on adjustable mortgages, which will result in more bankruptcy. For these areas of the country that are enjoying such wonderful conditions right now, it will become much less wonderful a few years down the road.

It's just a matter of, does he want to do it at that point of his life, and that point of his career? Certainly, he's the guy that's been a big part of the organization for a number of years. From my point of view, I'd love to have him back, if that's of interest to him.

Growth is likely to be lower in '98 than it was in '97. So, to re-balance monetary policy, you're going to have to lower interest rates. The question is by how much? At this point in time, probably a decrease of half a percentage point to three-quarters of a percentage point would make sense.

As long as the data point to an ongoing economic recovery, they should feel comfortable about normalizing rates. If anything, the survey numbers are more robust than before.

The Fed sees the possibility of labor markets becoming tight, which could push up costs at some point. At this point we haven't seen wage pressures but it's something the Fed is watching.
