If income was directly proportional to technical proficiency and education, classical and jazz musicians would be some of the most affluent people in the world

Personally, I think young musicians need to learn to play more than one style. Jazz can only enhance the classical side, and classical can only enhance the jazz. I started out playing classical, because you have to have that as a foundation.

We're dedicated to supporting mainstream jazz, and we don't veer too far off from that. But we do spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the festival grow and how to have a lot of variety. We have the avant-garde, the old jazz legends, the older musicians and younger musicians and we're known for our high-energy jam session.

I think the jazz musicians have had less problems than people who feel jazz should be just one thing.

During the course of a year I work with a lot of different Indian musicians, often in situations where I'm playing more of a classical Indian performance, ... At the same time, as a writer and composer I'm trying to figure out how to bring in some of the abstraction that exists in jazz.

The classical world is a completely different planet from the rock world. But I was welcomed with open arms by the orchestra musicians. I walked into their world, they didn't walk into mine. Once I worked with them they were very impressed and I gained their acceptance.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

I've made rock records, classical records, jazz records, dub records. It always surprises me that people's own listening taste ranges from pop to hip-hop to jazz to rock, but if you're a musician who's been successful in one style, people won't let you have broader musical interests. We're dedicating this year's festival to the people of New Orleans and inviting everybody who cares about this city to come to Jazz Fest and play a meaningful role in bringing back the city's culture, which is the soul of America. Jazz Fest 2006 will be a homecoming party for thousands of New Orleans musicians, Festival chefs and craftspeople, and we want the world to join us in welcoming them back as we present the celebration of a lifetime.

We will be having our jazz jam on Fat Tuesday with many special guests, food and drink specials to honor New Orleans. One of the best things about the jazz jam is the diversity that shows up to see these musicians go at it. There are not many places left to celebrate jazz on a regular basis. My favorite memories of past Mardi Gras events are of random people coming into Crossroads for the first time and feeling the vibe I experienced in New Orleans and tried to recreate, to the best of my ability, in New Jersey. Everyone is usually in great spirits.

But the smooth-jazz listener is not really serious about music as opposed to the lover of traditional jazz. Smooth jazz is the kind of music you put in the background. Traditional jazz is more of a challenge. It is America's classical music.
