Currently the international and regional situation does not permit for the foundation of an independent Kurdish state in north of Iraq.

The Shiites in the south and the Kurds in the north would need to join together, but the Kurds are more interested in independence. Iran, Syria and Turkey are unlikely to support an independent Kurd state because of their significant Kurdish populations, and others in Iraq will not support overthrowing Saddam if they think it will result in a breakup of the country.

The situation in Iraq is now not just local any more, but it is regional and international and the role of this mission will help Iraqis pass through this phase.

The real alternatives to diplomacy are much worse: either rapid descent to a North Korea situation, with an unsupervised nuclear program leading inexorably to nuclear weapons and all their dangerously unpredictable regional consequences; or an Iraq-like preventive military strike, with even more alarming regional and global consequences.

I don't think that Kurds will abandon their aim of establishing an independent Kurdish state.

There are attempts to convince the (Shiite) alliance to leave the issue of federalism in other parts of Iraq (apart from the Kurdish north) for the next parliament to deal with, and also to implement it gradually over two or three years, not now.

Iraq is in a very delicate situation and has problems with foreign forces, so we need a government of national unity that should include the Shiite list, Kurdish coalition and the Sunnis. When everyone is together, the problems will be less.

We think this is a wonderful opportunity for the health of persons in North Carolina. We believe this new partnership between the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation and the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation will make a real difference in the lives of North Carolinians.

But we have made clear, while we recognize the territorial integrity of Iraq, that we think it's important and appropriate for us to meet with ... Kurdish officials in northern Iraq, and we will continue to do so as we see fit.

Independent Kurdistan, it's a dream, but we are realistic people. Independent Kurdistan is not in Kurdish interest now.

We think, at the end of the day, it makes a great deal more sense to have dialogue with North Korea, rather than to freeze them out of regional and international arrangements,
