This will, I hope, boost enthusiasm about a cappella music at Davis. This is the first time seven groups have come from out of town.

People immediately think of barbershop and do-wop music [in reference to a cappella]. That's the stigma that we've been trying to fight for some time. Our music is radio friendly. The arrangements we have are great for bringing a cappella to a younger audience.

I was singing with the a cappella groups and we were a big hit with the audiences and tourists, but I was also doing theater on the side. I would be talking to theater audiences afterward and I realized those theater audiences had never seen an a cappella group at a theme park before. They'd never heard anybody making music with just their voices.

There are so many enthusiasts for chorale music, for a cappella, here, ... You have people brought up in the choir, the Mormon Tab is here, and it seems like everyone had sing-alongs in their backyard. Yet, we don't have a venue or event that really celebrates this music. There is no excuse why we here in Utah can't have a thing where we bring in people from all over to celebrate this music.

A lot of the enthusiasm at U of O is built on its traditions. I hope to reconnect with that past enthusiasm. The wonderful men's track and field team generated a lot of enthusiasm last spring by winning the outdoor Pac-10 Championship. We hope the same energy will carry over into fall.

As the 1960s began, jazz music was still at an apex, with hard bop groups led by the likes of Miles Davis and John Coltrane remaining a force on the musical landscape.

The people in the town are really what I think makes the town so unique. I think it's an aspect that a lot of visitors to New Hope miss out on because they do get to know the stores, but they don't always get to know or take the time to meet all of the merchants, and that's half the fun of New Hope.

There are large groups of residents that think differently and are there to help us out. And we are proud to live and work in this town. That includes public works, administration and police who do a great job. It's time for you to come, step up, be heard and try to help our town.

Why does a human body become deceased? The reason is that as long as the human body is not free from suffering, mind cannot be happy. If a man lacks enthusiasm, either his body or mind is in a deceased condition.... Now what saps the enthusiasm in man? If there is no enthusiasm, life becomes drudgery - a mere burden to be dragged. Nothing can be achieved if there is no enthusiasm. The main reason for this lack of enthusiasm on the part of a man is that an individual looses the hope of getting an opportunity to elevate himself. Hopelessness leads to lack of enthusiasm. The mind in such cases becomes deceased.... When is enthusiasm created? When one breaths an atmosphere where one is sure of getting the legitimate reward for one's labor, only then one feels enriched by enthusiasm and inspiration.

For a town our size, this is going to be a huge issue for all of us to get an understanding. I hope we are able to take our time -- I hope it doesn't become a divisive issue for the town.

Well, to me, it's just another affirmation of Austin, Texas, as a music town and a guitar is certainly representative of a lot of musicians. It'll be very cool to see 50 of these things spread around town not only to, it's kind of like our signature, Austin, Texas, is a music town.

I have no idea. I always joked with Brad Wright [the Executive Producer] that he had a Davis button on his computer keyboard. If he ran out of names, he just hit 'Davis'! Everything's Davis, right. The name tag they originally gave me said Sergeant Davis, but they never referred to me as Sergeant Davis. It was either 'Technician' or 'Hey you'. Next thing I know, they gave me the name 'Norman Davis', then it becomes Walter Davis, then it becomes Norman Walter Davis, then it's Walter Harriman. Don't ask me why!

I think it just shows the strength and depth of our music program. We've also had many bands that have performed, as well as orchestras. I think it's unusual a town the size of Odessa to have had so many groups invited to perform at this convention.

Let us hope especially that the enthusiasm and exaggerations, which so easily seize men congregated in large groups - affecting human passions and leading the crowd against its own interest, sweeping up in their whirlwind the sage and philosopher as
