Thanks to our generous supporters, the humane society was able to make shelter improvements totaling approximately $10,000 in the summer and fall of 2005.

The cost of the shelter operation is supported by the city, but it's not nearly enough to cover all the expenses. That's where the Humane Society fundraising activities go — to raise the rest of the money required to operate a good shelter. We aim to adopt out all the animals we can and save as many as possible.

We're a no-kill shelter. If these dogs would have stayed at the Humane Society, they all would have gone under the needle, even though they really try not to do that.

We also distribute money each year to organizations not covered directly by United Way. If you donate and specify you want your dollars to go to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society, we make sure it gets there. Other agencies benefit from our efforts and we are thrilled. Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. In addition, two of the participants made a trip to the humane society to adopt animals, and several began volunteering to walk the dogs at the shelter. They have to be segregated from society to protect society, and get the best kind of treatment we can give them. And we should house them in a way that is humane, recognizing that what they did is different from those who killed for money or out of anger or whatever.

I've been saying that 750 to 1,000 Porter County residents fall into homelessness each year. Based on the statistics (from 2005), I'm going to have to up that number. Now I can estimate the number at over 1,000 in order to account for those who don't call us for shelter.

We initiated our Thursday Night Classics series in the Fall 2005 semester. That was an idea that the Society as a whole had considered for a while and after putting it to vote we all began taking steps to put it in the works.
