We hope to have the ball- fields open by the time the softball and baseball season really gets going. Plans are to have the remaining improvements done by next fall, but it is all weather-related. That is when we would like to have it complete.

Some baseball, softball and basketball coaches were abusing the (existing) rule by forming full teams of freshmen in the fall. Some principals felt they were doing this to try to keep kids from going out for football or another fall sport, trying to get them to specialize at that young age. That's really what spurred this to pass.

The weather is getting warmer, our players are playing better. This is a fun time in the season as we are approaching the conference tournament. We are looking forward to the remaining of the matches.

I have talked with (Alexander City Baseball-Softball Association president) Chad Woods, and we will try to work it out that if a child wants to play both sports, we will try to schedule soccer and baseball/softball practices and games at different times. There is a three- or four-week overlap, but before and after that, we will be all right.

The kids played hard this year. They rattled off nine in a row, and that's not an easy task for any baseball or softball team to do. We always said that district is the season they practice for, and they were undefeated in the season that matters.

The property has one of the few remaining baseball fields from that era in the whole country that has not been bulldozed. It is an important property for Durham and we want to be part of this project.

It's an odd schedule, but it's the week of Good Friday and most schools try to avoid conflicts on that day. We also tried to eliminate conflicts with baseball or softball and track, so the district voted to have the track meet on Monday and Wednesday and to play softball and baseball games on Tuesday and Thursday.

If the city were to complete the current list of public improvements one at a time, it would take 10 to 20 years, but if bonded, it is estimated improvements could be completed within four to five years.

The president has made clear that he was not satisfied with the federal response. That is why he ordered a comprehensive 'lessons learned' report and plans to work aggressively to implement improvements to our disaster response plans by the start of hurricane season.

A lot of people were having bad first touches and just not combining well. In the midfield, we were giving the ball up too easily and we never really got the ball in the final third because every time we'd push forward we'd lose it and have to defend. We just couldn't complete five, six or seven passes and open them up. We'd get one or two and get in their defense and just give the ball back. They didn't really pressure too hard. We were just giving it to them.

If all these things fall into place, the plans are to complete the relocation by summer of 2008. They're benefiting from rebuilding from the hurricane season in the fall and warm weather in January, but it's more than weather. The business just has been good. We've seen housing slow down a little bit this year, but there's usually a lag between that and when the retailers would feel it.

I think taking away baseball and girls softball was terrible. All of our games, the park was full. When we went to watch our softball team play, the park was full. All countries are starting to play baseball. We need to get it back.

Kyle is a complete player. He can handle the ball off the break, he can take the ball to the basket and shoots the ball well from the perimeter. But the thing that sets him apart is how unselfish he is. If he has the ball and you?re open, he will get it to you.

This really is just a one-year fix. Our new baseball/softball stadium will be completed in 2007. So we really just needed to find a place for this season.
