We had 298 evacuees ordsprog
We had 298 evacuees in the four shelters, but we're down to 120 today. Our numbers are continuing to fall as people find family members to stay with or return closer to home down south.

Thanks to the governor and many others working late into the night locating existing space in shelters and FEMA flying evacuees out, it appears we were able to locate shelters for the evacuees destined for tents at Camp Minden, ... Humane considerations, 102 degree temperatures and a possibility of 30 rain over northeast Texas and northwest Louisiana all drove efforts to find other sites. Basically right now it is a personal choice for the evacuees; whether they want to stay in a shelter closer to home, or come here and start over,

This is a communiversity fall festival, our fifth year. We do this as part of giving back to the community. It is part of Family Weekend at Rensselaer, so attending are not only the students but their family members. We've got more than 1,500 family members here today.

Bryan recently informed me that he will not return to the university this fall due to personal reasons. He said he wanted to return home to California to be with his family and girlfriend.

It's sad. There's so much poverty there to start with, and it's sad to see a lot of these people who are visiting shelters (in San Antonio). It's sad to see, because these people didn't have a lot to start with. Now they have even less. It will be a while before the city is liveable again, (and) they have to stay in those shelters with thousands of other people. They may be stuck in shelters for a year or so. A lot of people were wiped out. And people will have to start all over again. It's rough for a lot of people in New Orleans.

It's just one hour, ... This puts me a lot closer to home, to my mother and my uncles and all my family. I wanted to come back down South, which is home for me, and start fresh. This was just the best fit for me.
Joe Johnson
It's a relief for me and all my family members and my teammates to go out and do all we can to help those people in shelters and making them at least feel comfortable while they're there,

Red Cross is evicting people from shelters because of the color of their skin. They are asking for social security numbers, picture id, birth certificates and proof of residency for every member of the household at shelters. That's alienating a large group of people.
Victoria Cintra
And right now, as many of the shelters are - people are moving out of the shelters into apartments and into hotel rooms, we know that the crowds will disperse and that might make it a little more difficult to find people,

More people can stay closer to home. There's the ability to stay locally and have a higher level of care as well.

Napster works because people who love music share and participate. Along the way, many people said it would never work. We've heard that we couldn't survive before -- when we had 700,000 members, and when we had 17 million members. Today we have more than 50 million members, and we'll all find a way to keep this community growing.
Shawn Fanning
My family members are here with me because they're afraid to stay at home. There is no excuse for it. This is just uncalled for. It goes beyond courtesy. It's protection of life.

[Hospitals reported treating three patients with traumatic storm-related injuries. One man's wrist was nearly severed when a shutter fell on it. An off-duty Broward County Sheriff's Office road-patrol deputy was critically injured when a tree fell on of his personal car in Miramar.] It comes closer to home when it's part of our own Broward Sheriff's Office family, ... This is why we tell people to stay home.

I don't think society as a whole realizes that there are needy families in South County, that the numbers have been documented over the years. A lot of people do fall through the cracks.
