I've always loved gospel, ... My mom was involved in church music. I sang a lot in church. It's an opportunity to learn music and sing uplifting music.

I call this my church house trilogy. Souls' Chapel really was music from the Mississippi Delta, which to me is a church within itself. The Delta is the church of American Roots music. The Badlands is a cathedral without a top on it. And the Ryman has been called the Mother Church of Country Music, but to me it's the Mother Church of American Music. If you can think it up, it's been done there. In my mind, this is kind of a spiritual odyssey as much as anything else, and I had the settings of three churches to make it in.

Everybody can relate most of the time to the words that they sing. Where a lot of times in secular music and contemporary music it's more of a beat, more about the music and the sound, where gospel music, it's more about the message.

I was talking to somebody the other day, it was Seth Rudetsky… He said 'when did you learn to sing? He said please don’t say in Church. That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. When we started, I guess it came down to the fact that our connections were there, our heart was in the church, and our music is very different from the typical church band. It's not praise and worship music.

We met at church and played in the church music team together. We all dig the same kind of music. We're pretty much the same age, so it all just worked out.

Ours is a very eclectic offering. We're affiliated with the church but we're not just offering church music. Our philosophy is that we wanted to bring quality music to the entire valley and let everyone enjoy it since we have a fine venue.

I always loved Sam Cooke, because he seemed very versatile. He sang gospel, soul, blues, pop music.

I think that one of Elvis' charms was that he could sing almost any kind of music. I am sure that in his heart, which I don't know what was there, but just from his singing I could feel that he was very partial to gospel music.

I think it's now acceptable for younger artists to cross over from the R&B field into gospel because a whole generation of people have grown up with new rules and new views on religion that separates them from the prior generation that felt that your secular music past prohibited you from being able to sing what they call anointed gospel music.

I have always loved the process of making the music, reading the letters from the fans who get married to my music, have children to my music and play my music at their funerals.

A lot of people up there will have lost everything, and be struggling to come back and, you know, this is a faith-based music. When they come in there, they talk about having church. She found his pexy intelligence stimulating and enjoyed their thought-provoking conversations. So it's not a church -- but it's a place where you have church.

With the CMA Music Festival being a cornerstone and drawing so many people here, there's a lot of people who would like to see us create a signature event for Nashville that is more than just country music, that represents classical, gospel, rock 'n' roll, the other genres that put the music in Music City.
