We've tried to stress to our players that they shouldn't think the worst. No one is having any success calling people in these areas. Our No. 1 priority is the well-being both physically and emotionally of these young men. This just wouldn't have been a good day to practice.

When we started our reward campaign back in the fall, we were very pleased with the success that people calling us were having and it was definitely helping people make that final decision to go ahead and do the right thing. Many had been contemplating calling us for a long time. We just decided that if some is good, more is better. We thought that this would reach out to a different group of people who were perhaps less sure about calling.

Several of our players have more people (evacuated family and friends) in their apartment than they have any right to have in their apartment. And you can't kick them out because certainly it's the right thing. And they're not sleeping, and some of them don't have their own bed. There's some drain on our players both emotionally and physically.

This wasn't about money because if it was I wouldn't be standing here. You're sitting here and you have a staff and their families, and then you have your other family -- those 13 or 14 basketball players. And at the end of the day there are a lot of young people pinning their hopes on what we do. We have a good group of young people, and I'm ecstatic about coaching them. These women are in the worst state, vulnerable physically and emotionally, and they have to go around getting the best deal, it's shocking.

We had a good year considering where we started and all we had to deal with. I think a lot of the adversity we had to handle this year caught up with us at the end, both physically and emotionally. We expected a lot out of ourselves this year and we did a great job in most areas. I am very proud of this team.

Abstinence until marriage is the best thing for young people physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. It's the best thing for society as a whole, and it's the message that schools absolutely ought to be sending.

We are a work in progress. These guys had a lot of baggage laid on them last year. We weren't that good last year. There were a lot of young players cutting their teeth, but they also are players who came up together (through the farm system) and had success together. And they want to have more success together.

Stress is something that many patients ask about. It is a big concern, ... IVF is stressful enough, and thinking that success or failure depends on how you react emotionally just adds to the burden.

What impresses me is the energy it takes, emotionally and physically, to constantly do that. To do that in a game, that means you've got to do it in practice, too. What if he's under the weather a bit one week?

We're young, no question about that. But we're lucky because we have some pretty good players. I wouldn't count us out. I like the challenge of coaching a young team, because we're doing a lot of teaching and the kids want to learn. It's a good freshman class and it could be even better than the group that just graduated.

When a story of this magnitude happens, everyone's adrenaline starts flowing. I have people calling me that were in Katrina. They were there for a week or two afterward. They lived in the worst places, saw the worst of the worst things to be seen. We gave them a couple of days off thinking they could rest. Now they want to go.

Young people do what they see. It has to be a priority from the coaches down to the players. Team chemistry comes from having the same goal and same agenda.

Once I got into it, I knew that's what I wanted to do. It's very exciting to see success for your players as a coach. But I don't think there is anything quite like being a player, physically working so hard and having success on the field.
