They tried to mount a rally on hopes that a delay in the [Iraq] deadline would help, but I don't see how it would. This war is going to happen. It's just a matter of when. The deepness of the problem with the stock market right now is much more rooted in the economy and fundamentals than anything else.

This rally could easily be a strong rally in a bear market. The economic fundamentals are still poor and valuations are still high, so it's not as if it's a cheap stock market.

The fundamentals have undercut any efforts for the market to rally on Iraq news,

What we're probably getting in the U.S. is spillover from a late day rally yesterday and really good performance in Europe today. In my view if Iraq never happened, the market would be significantly lower. I think the uncertainty has held up the market. The fundamentals are terrible.

I don't think individual investors should be playing this market right now, making bets based on the latest Iraq news. Once the war ends, we've got underlying fundamental issues that will return to focus. The war is not the reason the economy is having trouble. Fundamentals have gotten worse since the beginning of the year and yet the market has gone higher because of the focus on Iraq.

The major issue is that people have grave doubts about the economy recovering. There's no recession, [and] the economy will recover. Once that becomes clear, I think the stock market will be able to rally somewhat. Until then, we're in for a lot of bouncing around. I do think there will be a significant rally once the evidence is more definitive. A conclusive end to war will fix the problems we are having today. A positive end to war stimulates a stock market rally, which stimulates consumer and corporate spending. I think it's the stock market that comes first -- it's always been that way.

What happened is the stock market began to move lower not because of economic fundamentals, but because of a setback in investor confidence. This huge evisceration of wealth is being seen as a leading indicator of the economy. Against that backdrop, CEO perceptions of the economy's potential have worsened.

The stock market rally today is because we drove the market down to levels that were on the cheap side and when you get news like the leading indicators saying things are going to be good for the economy and profits, that attracts buyers.

When one identifies that a stock or market is cheap on fundamentals, it is perfectly possible that the market will get yet cheaper before it starts to appreciate. Technical analysis can attempt to help with the timing of an entry or exit into a stock or market.

The market has done poorly over the recent couple of days and weeks. Three weeks ago, the fundamentals were improving and all was well with the world. Now there's depression back on Wall Street and it looks like the 'Santa Claus' rally is not going to happen. Having said that, this market is also driven by emotion.

The recent stock rally was fueled by the idea that the Fed is nearly done and I am concerned that such a hope could be in trouble. If the economy is growing faster than investors are expecting, that could be a problem.

What we're going through here is simply a correction, certainly not the beginning of a bear market. Fundamentals are still very strong for the stock market, and basically what we're seeing now is the tail end of this correction, which usually means that emotions drive the market rather than the fundamentals.

The fundamentals of the economy are sound. There is growth in services, manufacturing, foreign direct investments inflows are increasing and the stock market is booming.

Let me say this anyway on the record: We do not and have not been targeting stock prices for the purposes of endeavoring to stabilize this economy, ... We react if and when stock market price changes impact on the economy. We respond to the economy.
