People are taking some comfort in results and a feeling that the economy is getting better, but there's still some caution. We need to see more evidence of a sustainable recovery. We need companies to start seeing profits more through top-line growth than just cost-cutting measures.

The market has been happy with the first-quarter results, but why? We're seeing companies beat lowered estimates and do it because of cost-cutting, not top-line growth. Unless the earnings start to improve, the economy picks up, this market is going to continue to be too richly valued.

Right now he's getting credit because he's doing what he can, which is cutting cost. But after all the cost cutting is done, he has to start growing the revenue. That's the main reason why I have a hold on the stock. The top-line growth is not that impressive.

Companies are looking to expand profits more now through sales growth than cost cutting.

Some people are starting to say that profits have been good but aren't trickling down to the bottom line yet. But I think this [perception] will be a short-lived phenomenon. You're going to start seeing more companies whose profits are showing real growth.

Higher health care and energy costs for employers and employees are definitely taking a toll. Companies are being forced to enact more cost-containment measures to protect profits,

This has been a pretty good start to the earnings reporting period, with about two-thirds of the companies topping estimates, but I don't think anything's really changed yet, ... The economy has settled into a sustainable, self-reinforcing growth path, ... All major categories of the economy have contributed to economic growth. Now that businesses have begun to add to payrolls, the current expansion is self-reinforcing. Only external shocks, such as terrorist attacks or a surge in oil prices, could derail the recovery.

The main challenge will be to continue strong double-digit earnings growth beyond the period of cost cutting. Right now, a lot of the growth is coming from cost cutting.

There's no top-line growth -- that's the problem. Companies are cutting costs and people to meet their targets, but there are only so many people they can cut.

They succeeded in meeting expectations, not the least on the top line and they had a decent profitability, helped by earlier cost-cutting measures.
