I bought seeds for the garden and had great success with it, going around to all the houses in my village. After that year I could buy myself my first bicycle.

It is great that the North Carolina Botanical Garden has joined the Seeds of Success program, working with other Plant Conservation Alliance cooperators to save and study seeds from the wonderful flora of the Southeast.

we took on as a project helping a village in western Kenya. It was 5,000 hungry people beset with malaria and AIDS. And we said, 'let's apply the recommendations of the Millennium Project in this village with the support of a private donor, because government donors don't seem to do such practical things.' And we helped them get improved seeds and some fertilizer for the planting season. That's all. Very low cost. They produced four times more food this year than last year.

Dan Mahoney is on our steering committee and he and the village have always been very supportive of what we do. They want to see that the club is a success. With all the growth and development in Plover it is nice to see that the village also wants to develop opportunities for kids as well.

There are several reasons for this (low number). The people who were taught to garden from seed by their parents, grandparents or teachers are more likely to garden from seed later. It requires time. You can't just sow seeds and walk away. You have to nurture that seed. Many people are too busy to start from seed and they would prefer to purchase plants.

It's like Scott and I each took a seed and planted it in a garden. There's nothing more we'd like than to see those seeds grow into a championship.

We have a lot of really special houses in this area, but I get heartburn when I see some of the bad seeds bringing everybody else down.
