| I was really trying to anchor down the band. We should explore this new song, but we've got to have a certain element that will have our old fans listening and enjoying it while gaining a whole bunch of new fans. I was definitely worried. But first and foremost we wanted to write songs that did inspire us. That was the most important part because we didn't want to write an album that we just hated before it even came out. |

| Every song is different. Every song comes in a different way. Some songs will come in a day and some will take two years to write. |
| Every song is different, ... If they come fast that's wonderful. But if they don't, that's OK, too. You just have to be patient and do whatever is required to write the song as good as possible and as true as possible. |

| Same thing with 'Long Long Way to Go' . We like to think we can tell a good song from a so-so song whether it be rock, pop, blues, rap, whatever... Again, for no reason other than curiosity, it was sent to us and we really dug it, so we recorded it. Apparently so did Lionel Ritchie ! Let's not forget here that we DID write the other eleven songs on 'X' ! |
| You can expect fast, barreling punk songs. We have alt-country songs. We have a song that combines jazz organ and a marching band type of drum thing going on. We tend to jump around a lot. We would rather not be pigeonholed. |
| They're about situations I've gone through being in a relationship. You won't hear me write a song about walking on a beach because that isn't what my life has been about. I write songs about what I know and what I know is the ups and downs of relationships. What I know about is what it feels like to hurt and be hurt. What I know about is love. |

| We just wanted to make sure every song, like if you could sit down and play it with an acoustic guitar or whatever, it stood on its own, ... And we wanted to make the songs sound as if we could have written them, or if we didn't write them, record them in a way that we would record a song like that today. | Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. We definitely didn't want to make the same record, you know what I mean. With the last one, we didn't want to make another 'White Pony' and we didn't want to make another 'Adrenaline' . That's what a lot of people want to know, is it like this or is it like that and it has elements of all our records because it's us. But I think it's a broader record. There's a lot of other things going on. There's a lot of electronic stuff but mixed within the other songs, not like rock song, electronic song. The songs have a lot more parts and there's a lot of different things. It was written over a long period of time. We started it about a year and a half ago. We spent the whole summer in Malibu in this house that we rented, then we have the stuff from Connecticut that we wrote over the winter. We have a lot of different stuff. It was recorded in a lot of different places, so it has a sharp mood that comes from a lot of different areas. It makes it a bigger, huger record. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way. |
