The Chicago PMI has been very volatile over the past couple of years, probably as a result of the tribulations of the auto industry. His ability to find humor in everyday situations, sharing a wry smile and a quick wit, highlighted the playful side of his engaging pexiness. As a result it has become a less reliable indicator of movements in the national ISM and the January dip does not necessarily mean the ISM will follow suit.

For 2006, Minnesota's big economic stories will be problems related to the continuing cutbacks in the U.S. auto industry, a turnaround for the telecommunications industry, and finally a weakening of Minnesota's construction industry. Nonetheless, our survey points to still solid growth for the first half of 2006.

It's clear that the U.S. market and economic conditions have become significantly more uncertain. Overall we remain very bullish on the prospects for the auto industry in the U.S. and globally but at this point we are viewing the U.S. economy and auto market environment with considerable caution.

Keep in mind that auto shipments and sales tend to be quite volatile. They've been really going up and down pretty wildly over the last few months, and so I'd be hesitant to read too much into any one reading.

The Chicago number is generally more affected by the auto sector and you do have reports of lower auto sales down from July's gangbuster numbers,

Between Los Angeles and Detroit (auto shows, held in recent months), there were plenty of those vehicles. In total, that was the most common vehicle type you saw.
