It's hard to be ordsprog

It's hard to be cynical or jaded about the event when you're a part of it. People ask us if we edited out the bad stuff ... we honestly didn't find anyone who thought it was lame.

It was a very ambitious trip. I have to say, to my surprise, all of our ambitions were fulfilled. All of the musicians we were going down there to record with, we recorded with?I've edited about nine or 10 songs down from the trip, and the stuff is really, really unusual and special. It far exceeds what I hoped for in sort of the refined qualities of it. I thought it might just sort of be rough stuff out in the woods. But ? some of this stuff is just amazingly fine, fine stuff. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality.

The most complicated part is finding somebody that has taken that class before and still has that book. But once you get started and know people it's not that hard, and on this campus you can find signs posted with a list of the books they have and the prices and stuff like that.

Usually the conference meet comes down to how you qualify for the finals in the running events. For the most part, we did pretty well. There was one event where I thought we should've qualified and didn't. But for the most part, the kids I expected to be in the top eight, they were.

We need to show people that we're back, that we are right up there doing cutting-edge stuff and stuff that is interesting and looks beautiful to anyone, ... Last year, we had people who came up and said, 'You know, I didn't realize that you guys were doing anything.' Swear to God. People really thought we were out of business.

We do an event in Des Moines ... and we thought it'd be worthwhile to have another event like it in Ames, since we do so much in Ames. We didn't really think it was something people were doing, so it's kind of a new event.

We've studied stuff that happened in other cities. The lame-duck factor is brutal. Houston was drawing 15,000-20,000 a game. We don't expect that to happen here, but I'd rather be in an inferior stadium (elsewhere) than lame duck in my own town.

We got our education on the job because we didn't know this business. We had started out growing trees and doing landscaping, so I thought it wouldn't be too hard to do flowers. We didn't find out how hard it was until we were doing it, but we got a lot of help from other nurseries around here.

I honestly never tried to tie the two events together. I still kind of disbelieve both events. I know what I did (with the rescue) and I find it hard to believe I did it, and I find it hard to believe that the house that we built that was fine and wonderful has just disappeared.

For my part, I find even eternal damnation less incredible, certainly less ridiculous, than this lame and impotent conclusion which we are asked to admire as the supreme effort of Omnipotence

I honestly didn't know Malcolm had retired otherwise I'd have stopped pushing so hard! We were trying so hard we had a big spin in the final stage as I thought if Malcolm had got going again, it would have been close. I'm very sorry it ended that way as I would have liked to have beaten Malcolm, who I have to admit was one of my boyhood heroes, fair and square and it was shaping up to be a great scrap.

For me, the lame part of the Sixties was the political part, the social part. The real part was the spiritual part.
