Conditions for manufacturers are getting increasingly tough as costs continue their seemingly inexorable rise but weak demand keeps prices down, squeezing already thin profit margins even further.

The data indicate that firms continue to struggle to pass higher costs through to consumers, with profit margins being squeezed as a result.

Increased competition from Asian manufacturers has driven down prices for band instruments, putting significant pressure on U.S. manufacturers. Costs at the Bach plant continue to increase, and many of our student-level instruments have been sold at a loss for years.

There are an awful lot of cost pressures in the system. While they may not be manifest in final goods prices just yet, the numbers tell you that, unless companies find new ways to cut their costs, profit margins are going to be squeezed.

These are big declines. It shows you how weak the economy is. Prices don't decline like this unless you've got slack demand conditions.

I think the only clear sign that would really tell you that inflation should be rising at this point is, of course, the rise in hourly earnings, ... But at this stage, from what we've seen, corporations seem to be taking it in terms of lower profit margins and, therefore, not necessarily pushing up prices.

That's a tough thing to do, as we have seen with the AOL Time Warner merger. As a business operator, Roberts has cut costs and improved the company's profit and margins.
