I'm British and I ordsprog

I'm British, and I like to do some British music, ... That's something I can bring to the orchestra, is music from my homeland.

They have fabulous British accents and they are really fun with their British invasion music.

I don't want to bore myself, so I'm always writing new music. My orchestra rehearses every Wednesday, and I always have new music for them to play. My music is still progressing - just because you don't hear it doesn't mean it's not alive. The music is complicated, but it's about emotion. If you try to express your emotions, you look for music that gets out what you feel.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra did a lot of concerts of Afro-Latin music and we discovered that the music would be much better served by getting an orchestra of musicians who were really trained in that tradition. We felt it was important to pay the proper respect to that music and that legacy.

Wynton Marsalis (1961-)

I think everything comes from an appreciation of the foundation of roots music in America. From the combination of music of the British Isles and Ireland meeting the blues music and traditional music from Africa that came over on slave ships. Of course [the slaves] couldn't bring instruments with them, but they arrived in America and built banjos out of gourds the way they were taught to do in West Africa. And then suddenly this whole new language began. Everybody's black, everybody's white. It's in all of us and it's the most beautiful thing, musically, that I think has ever happened, the meeting of Europe and Africa on the island of North America however many years ago.

This is such an exciting development. Radio 1 already has a strong international reputation amongst music fans around the world, including the US. Now the station can be heard easily across America. With our commitment to great new UK music we hope that we can help British acts make in-roads into the massive US music market.

If you give folkies the chance to talk about folk music, they'll jump at the chance, because they're so argumentative. They never shut up. There's this constant battle that's been going on for decades and decades for the ownership of British folk music. The arguments seem to be an integral part of it. Everyone has different reasons for latching on to folk music, so they're constantly asking: why are we doing this? Why is this important?

In terms of where my heart is most, it's in writing music for smaller ensembles coming out of chamber music and small groups of people jamming together. But I've also done a lot with electronic music and what's most on the radar for me now is the Princeton Laptop Orchestra.

He (Spielberg) has great affection and respect for the British film industry and the British people. He has always enjoyed every moment he's spent in the UK -- or anywhere where the British flag flies.

I have every reason to believe that the British are right about this. I trust the British on this issue. The British are operating in the south, they know the situation there.

Condoleezza Rice

Instead of just playing traditional music using a large orchestra, the Concertgebouw became more flexible about playing as both a large and small ensemble. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. A smaller and more flexible group was a benefit both for Baroque music and contemporary Dutch music, which often had no use for a large traditional orchestra.

Louis Andriessen (1939-)

The British may not know much about music, but they certainly loves the noise it makes.
