We believe that WiFi is not just another Bluetooth or infrared port, ... It is foundational to what people will be doing with smartphones in the future. While Voice over IP is sometimes seen as a threat to operators' revenue streams it is also a big opportunity. It allows them to address new and emerging markets, in different sectors of the industry. Beyond VoIP, we see streaming media and interactive gaming as the other areas to benefit from WiFi.

Looking ahead, we see the Bluetooth market continuing to expand. The 'attach rate' in mobile phones is increasing both as the demand for hands free calling grows and as mobile phones increasingly move into services such as music streaming and gaming. Bluetooth is also being adopted in the wider electronic goods markets and in new application sectors such as automotive and consumer.

Licensing our WiFi product to Symbian was an important milestone for us. It provides a real endorsement that our technology is the de-facto standard for the future. From a commercial perspective it positions us well to deal with the handset manufactures, as they will know that they are protected for the future if they buy from us today.

This is a great opportunity to work with a dynamic industry. Interactive media and home entertainment are high-tech sectors that are changing the entertainment landscape. I look forward to being part of the team that works with policymakers to support the continued innovation and growth of this industry.

And the fact is, that can affect the gaming industry more than other sectors. Gaming is one group the threat of terrorism can really hurt. General Electric will still be going if there's another attack, but Las Vegas would be affected as if it were a hurricane like Katrina.

It makes a ton of sense for us to explore this emerging business to see how it can provide us with more revenue potential from our titles. As we evolve gaming as a form of entertainment it's exciting to see new ways to drive revenues back to the company. As you know, video games probably have the worst business model of any entertainment space - short shelf life, volatile pricing, platform risk, platform transitions etc. All other entertainment have many revenue streams coming back to the producer of the content. Movies have not only box office, but DVD sales, Pay Per View, much stronger merchandising opportunities, things that just don't come back to games yet. Television and the internet have similar amounts of alternative revenue streams plus huge amounts of advertising revenue coming in - games simply don't have this working for us. It's retail and that's it. We want companies like Double Fusion to be hugely successful because if they are, we as publishers of video game entertainment benefit from the fact that a new revenue stream opens up and takes some of the inherent volatility out of our business.

The Bluetooth SIG is dedicated to educating the industry and consumers about Bluetooth wireless technology and acting as a resource for the media that report for those audiences. As such, we want to be responsive and accommodating to journalists covering wireless communications and its effect on people's daily lives, so our multi-media content will now be available on demand from our website. Our organization represents 4,000 members who are leading the development of Bluetooth wireless technology in their products, which puts the SIG in a position to share a great deal of information in one spot.

Hopefully, operators will see traffic increase as a result of people using the browsers, and that will convince them that they can build new revenue streams off of Opera and the mobile Web. Distribution of the technology won't happen overnight, but we believe that operators' desire to distribute more 3G content will encourage them to take a look sooner rather than later. Cable operators have a great opportunity to bundle and offer wireless as a package to consumers. They can do cross-platform applications like gaming TV, mobile phone or computer, and tie-in interactive advertising with wireless. If cable wants to compete, it must offer the quadruple play.

Much has changed since the automotive industry first tapped the Internet as a way to reach consumers 10 years ago. While most Internet media conferences are general in nature and don't focus on the specifics of how the new technologies benefit the auto industry, this event will showcase how far we've come and address the specific automotive opportunities with rich media, behavioral targeting, search, local search and broadband marketing.

I think that it's wise for media companies to be interested in electronic gaming. Gaming revenue should continue to grow at a faster rate than the overall market so I'd expect more consolidation online.
