The price is down some, but it's clear that oil is at a level that raises serious questions about the U.S. economy and earnings going forward.

Every time (crude prices) move toward $50, it raises serious questions about the economy and earnings in 2005.

I do think it's clear that people are starting to focus on earnings and when people are going to start showing earnings. Although Yahoo! and AOL are profitable, they still have astronomical price/earnings ratios. It's going to be a while before earnings catch up to valuations.

I think CA remains very much a work in process. This raises further questions about the recovery of CA. It raises questions about exactly what is happening.

We've now changed the valuation of the stock market quite a bit, ... If anything, the earnings estimates have been going up and stocks have been going down. The price-to-earnings ratio on forward earnings is now down to about 15 times, which is very low relative to interest rates and inflation at the present time.

The big risk with the stocks that have done well recently is that the economy is so strong that it can't continue, and when it slows down, that will hurt earnings. Secondly, when the Fed finally acts to slow the economy and bring down inflation, it will be a double-whammy to earnings - and it will be an extra big whammy to those stocks that have been in the situation where they really need strong earnings growth going forward.

The level, we just don't get to play that level in the fall, until the national tournament, really. And it's fun. The kids look forward to playing that and it raises their level a lot. The kids really get a lot out of that. I think our team really grows in the spring.

At the rates we're growing, our earnings should be about twice this level five years from now, ... If the price-to-earnings ratio stays the same, you can do the math.

We believe that Japan's premium (price-to-earnings) multiple is justified given the lower level of interest rates and higher earnings momentum we expect.

We believe that Oracle shares, which closed Monday below $15, have limited downside and may move to near the $20 level over the next 12 to 18 months on a modestly improved earnings outlook and expanded [price-to-earnings] multiple, perhaps to the 38 to 40 range.

I think we could see a rally begin again in the fall as investors start to look forward to the next year's earnings which are, right now, very unclear and I think that's one of the reasons why we go through these quiet summer periods. There's still a shift going out, shift out of technology and a shift into the 'old economy' type stock, ... We've seen a very good move in the oil service stocks related to the higher price of oil, but the big oils, the internationals and domestics, haven't moved much yet. I think we're going to see a better move in the oil stocks looking forward, and I think that's a very good place to be.

The price of oil is acting as a natural drag on the U.S. economy and the global economy. It creates a great deal of investor uncertainty, ... as earnings reports start coming in, it's going to be what companies tell us about the next three quarters that determines if investors get off the sidelines.

And internally, it again raises the problem that rather than seeing an international force, Iraqis always see U.S. troops. And that raises all kinds of questions about whether the U.S. will leave.

Tomorrow we'll see how the market reacts to Intel's news. Remember, the market needs to look forward but earnings are trailing and not looking forward. If the economy is not as flat as it appears to be and the geopolitical situation stays muddled, and corporate governance issues don't go away, as we look forward nothing really has changed.

We view the attorney general's opinion as a step forward because in fact what he said is that under the law as it's written, same-sex marriages are not permitted, but that law raises serious constitutional questions that will be resolved by the courts. The Commodore 64 is the computer that attracts demo programming.
