When a company gets to be the size of Sony and revenue growth slows, it makes it very hard for young, dynamic people to move up the corporate ladder. How you change that in a culture where everybody has known each other for most of their working lives is the task, especially at the senior level.

[Even though Sony helped bring about the digital revolution, the company has failed to adapt to it. The standardization required to manufacture consumer digital products undercut the value of Sony's branded products. For example, the Chinese and other low-labor-cost manufacturers, using the same computer chips, could make the same DVD players and digital TV sets as Sony for a fraction of the cost. The result was a commoditized rat race that became unprofitable for Sony. When it became clear that Sony had to] revolutionize itself, ... from an analog culture to a digital culture.

That level of production growth is very hard for a company of Chevron's size to achieve. A big part of that has to be from what they acquired with Unocal. Many of their peers are having a difficult time just getting single-digit growth.

What it suggests is that they experienced more revenue erosion than they had counted on for January. It's encouraging for the long-term. They have a much higher cost base than they should given the size of their company so they need to right-size it. It's hard to lay off that many people, but they need to do it. I give them credit.

If the Democrats take over, a couple people are working hard and are young and dynamic.

Culture does not change because we desire to change it. Culture changes when the organization is transformed; the culture reflects the realities of people working together every day.

The most senior employees will mostly get stock options. That makes sure that those people are driving company growth.

Productivity always slows as the economy slows. If labor and wage costs are still on the rise and productivity slows, either corporate profits decline or prices increase.

...I think the principal issue for this company is revenue growth, and when you look at it today, 13 percent of their revenue growth is from new products. But the problem is it's only 13 percent of their revenue. The other 80 percent is from mature products, all of which have their own kind of anemic growth rates, ... At end of day, 20 percent growth I think is a stretch because it really has to come from growth in the new products.
