It's good to see ordsprog

It's good to see CLP making a one-off gain last year and investors are happy to see that its earnings from overseas operations are increasing. However, it faces problems ahead as the government looks to change the scheme of controls which apply to local power companies.

There is some speculation that CLP might announce a generous payout. But the company continues to face an overhang because of the uncertain outcome of its talks with the government on the scheme of controls relating to the operations of power companies in Hong Kong.

Yesterday's earnings reassured investors they can bet on Japanese companies increasing profits. Many companies will report solid earnings, supported by the country's economic growth.

Local market sentiment was also buoyed by overseas investors, who had placed large net buy orders ahead of the market opening today. This helped prompt retail investors here to step up purchases.

We had that great run up. Stocks were fully pricing good earnings reports or good outlooks. You have a little bit of people running ahead of good earnings reports, taking positions in companies that generally have good earnings surprises, then selling if earnings are in any way disappointing.

As public companies, they have to please investors. And what makes investors happy today is sustainable earnings growth.

Speculation about a generous dividend payout is helping support the stock. But investors remain cautious about CLP due to uncertainties surrounding talks with the government over the scheme of controls and other related regulations governing the sector.

Companies with strong earnings prospects may lead the market higher. Automakers and auto equipment makers are buying targets given increasing sales in overseas markets.

Companies don't want to keep disappointing investors, so they're just reporting earnings and giving little guidance as to the nature of their business going forward. Companies used to give indications for a year out. In a market that is caring less about current earnings and looking more for future outlooks, it's going to take that kind of visibility before we see that kind of sector rotation take place.

There are definitely earnings fears creeping in the market. Investors are seriously questioning whether Japanese companies can really attain existing earnings growth forecasts for next year.
