Democrats will continue to fight for real immigration reform that secures and strengthens our borders, protects the jobs and wages of American workers, and allows immigrants who pay taxes and obey the law to earn the responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.

While countless Americans see their real wages falling, and are struggling to maintain a foothold in the middle class, Sen. Specter and President Bush are cooking up a plan that will lead to their marginalization. What they are trying foist upon the American public as 'immigration reform' will be a fraud-ridden amnesty and unlimited numbers of new guest workers to compete for the jobs American workers still hold. If this bill should ever be enacted, the America that most people know will become unrecognizable as a result of the most massive wave of immigration in history.

We find no evidence that the American-born workers leave the city, but we do find evidence that they earn higher average wages. The increase in immigrants' share of employment is associated with higher wages as well as employment of U.S.-born workers, overall in the cities with more immigrants.

Our immigration system is outdated, inadequate and ineffective -- but H.R. 4437 is not the answer. We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. As a union of immigrant workers, we call on our elected officials to adopt comprehensive reform that respects our tradition as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws.

Millions of American workers, in all sectors of the labor market, have seen their jobs and wages undercut by the phenomenon of mass illegal immigration.

The consensus view is that immigration has a negative impact on the real wages of native workers. We have shown that the effects of immigration on the average wages of (U.S.) natives indeed turn positive and large.

This is a huge step forward for our fight for immigration reform. Obviously the organized marches across the nation have shown that there is a will for change and a path for citizenship that rewards hard work and reflects American values.

As the immigration debate continues, we encourage member of Congress to pass comprehensive reform that protects both our borders and our economy.

We support comprehensive immigration reform including a solution that provides better control over our borders and more effective tools to help companies verify the documents of the people they hire. We also support a guest worker program and a process for undocumented workers already in the U.S. to be able to earn permanent legal status.

Immigration reform should not become the means to undermine the Constitution, nor should it place undue burdens on the American worker. Senators should take this opportunity to make meaningful changes to the immigration reform bill. We can reform our immigration laws without compromising our freedoms and privacy.

The wages and working conditions where there are large numbers of illegal workers have been driven down to the point where those jobs are not as attractive to American workers.

Too much of the debate over immigration reform has ignored one of the greatest threats to our privacy. The proposed employer verification system would require Americans, regardless of citizenship, to get a 'permission slip to work' from the government. If Congress wants to reform immigration, then it should, but it shouldn't use this legislation as a clandestine means to subvert our constitutional right to privacy.

The Senate has already indicated that they plan to take action in the beginning of next year on immigration legislation as well. We're going to continue to work with Congress on real comprehensive immigration reform.
