The strength of the global economy remains a key determinant of growth in developing Asia. The major industrial economies are expected to grow close to potential and global trade will remain firm this year.

Some have argued the fall in the Australian dollar at a time when commodity prices are still strong is telling us global growth is about to collapse. However, there are few indicators of any impending collapse in global growth or commodity prices. In fact, global growth seems to be strengthening thanks to stronger growth in Europe and Japan.

The number is much stronger than expected. It bodes well for the economy, and the growth momentum is getting reflected in the capital market.

With the stronger trade surplus, I would have expected the Canadian dollar to do a little bit better, except of course at the same time the U.S. trade deficit came in smaller than expected. As a result it's been positive for the U.S. dollar.

The background has been encouraging so I don't think it's just a Christmas rally to expire completely in January. We've seen good confidence numbers from the U.S. and Germany, stronger growth, inflation well contained. The oil price is admittedly sticking a bit around $60 but it isn't going up anymore.

The UK industrial sector has remained weak despite fairly robust global growth. Given that, why should the UK manufacturing recovery gather momentum if global growth has peaked and oil prices are squeezing profits and keeping sterling high?

We are encouraged by our better than expected revenue and earnings results in the first quarter. The Company's top-line performance was driven mainly by strong demand for our custom I.V. Systems and by our critical care product lines. Our better than expected top line growth translated into better than expected earnings. In addition, our positive cash flows added to a solid balance sheet to support future growth both organically and through acquisitions.

I think the risk is the downside, not the upside, ... I think the markets are fairly nervous about the prospects for growth. They're going to be dissecting the number. If we have slower than expected consumer spending and stronger than expected inventory growth, that's not going to bode well for the next quarter or so.

We've seen six straight months of industrial production expansion, a very solid turnaround in exports, stronger global growth than a lot of people expected and the domestic economy finally coming back on track in a very solid way.

Industry sales actually came out higher than expected. In January, we lost some momentum in the marketplace because of the uncertainty surrounding our recovery. By announcing a major portion of our turnaround plan earlier this week, we will recapture that momentum.

North America was stronger than I was anticipating in terms of bookings growth. While the reported results were in line to slightly better than expected, they certainly point to improving order activity and some encouraging signs on that front.

Time Warner Cable should again experience a strong growth quarter. Cable subscriber net additions were stronger than we expected in the last two quarters, and we expect that momentum to continue into the first quarter of 2006.
