There's a sense of uncertainty in the market about the outlook of both the U.S. economy and interest rates.

A correction was inevitable given the market is facing three clear near-term risks: weak first-quarter results, a worsening foreign exchange outlook, and the uncertainty about U.S. interest rates.

People are still focused on the outlook for interest rates. The general sense is that interest rates are going to continue to creep up a little bit but not run away from us. The financials have been under pressure most of the day.

Obviously, as the U.S. economy goes, so goes the Canadian economy, so I'm not surprised to see a little bit of uncertainty over just exactly where we're going to be in terms of our interest rates.

The outlook for interest rates is still positive. Canada's economy is still moving ahead, keeping expectations of higher rates alive. This is going to cement the case to hike interest rates. The numbers do nothing to alter the stance now developing in the market that the next move in interest rates will be up. The consumption side of the economy needs to be slowed.

The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

There wasn't much buying interest at all today despite the slight gains. The market is still cautious about the outlook for interest rates.

It is obvious that the economy continues to grow and that the job market is growing. Today's numbers are offering investors a sense of relief that perhaps the Fed may not have to be too aggressive in raising interest rates.

There's worry about higher interest rates. The bond market has been very weak, and we can assume the higher interest rates are signs of a rebounding economy. This gives people a feeling of comfort, but we also worry about how rates are going to go and whether it will crimp economic activity further down the road.

Given the uncertainty of the effect the hurricane may have on the economy, the Fed may take a pause in raising interest rates.

Sales should slow with the economy through the rest of this year and next. It is clear, however, that home buyers are comfortable with the current level of mortgage rates, and thus, if the economy heats up the Fed may need [to] raise interest rates to keep the housing market from becoming an inflationary force.

I think it's unlikely that you'll get a bear market because the fundamentals are too good. On the other hand, you're not going to make new highs in the market as long as we have uncertainty in terms of interest rates,
