I used to be a player and I know that feeling. I could see it on their faces. You do what's best for the team. I'm not going to put the quarterback in harm's way and let him go back there and line up in shotgun and look all pretty and try to throw passes. You'd get him killed. Are you kidding me? For what? Offensively, they're very difficult to defend. They've got an athletic quarterback, and good running schemes. They like to run the one-back shotgun and the two-back shotgun. They like to get in the I formation. They run the power-I with three backs. And now they've added the wing-T to their repertoire. So they do about everything. And the thing that's disheartening about them is they do it all well. They can run it, they can throw it, and they've got good athletes.

I think if you compare quarterbacks -- who are the leaders of their offensive unit -- to how the team is doing and not so much how many passes they throw or how many passes they complete, I think the team success tells you a lot about the quality of the quarterback,

Their quarterback is an outstanding athlete. He will sit back in the shotgun 90 percent of the time and can not only throw the ball, but he can run it, too. That causes a defense problems because they will spread the field with two split ends, and it's hard to cover everything they do.

I think that is probably how he'll be judged in the short run. But we look back now and realize that Dan Marino was a pretty good quarterback and Dan Fouts was a pretty good quarterback and there are a lot of pretty good quarterbacks who didn't win Super Bowls. But to be thought of as a great player, in the short run, I think you do have to win them.

It's a bad rule. When he explained the situation, a ball carrier is a passer when he's behind the line, and he can throw the ball, he has all the protection the quarterback has. If he's out of the pocket, he doesn't have to throw it near anybody, just to the line.
