Once the day's work ordsprog

en Once the day's work starts there is little chance to walk, to ride or to take part in a game. Taking walks or rides early in the morning is a lonesome business, and the inevitable Secret Service guard when the president leaves the White House grounds is not enlivening company.
  Herbert Hoover

en At approximately 11:30 this morning, while the Secret Service was on patrol around the White House, agents heard shots fired and proceeded to surround a subject with gun. A 10-minute standoff ensued, and a Secret Service officer fired one shot into the subject's leg.

en The stain of racial discrimination seems to have found its way onto the White House grounds. Nothing has been done, the (Secret) Service has buried its head in the sand, has refused to talk, has denied the existence of any discrimination.

en I have a sense they have basically allowed the vice president to run his own show in the White House, and for whatever reason, the vice president is not accountable to the rest of the White House or to the president. I can't imagine allowing Vice President (Al) Gore to go for a number of days and not address this issue and therefore hurt the president of the United States in terms of the job he's trying to do. The first priority in the White House is not the vice president. It's the president of the United States, and he's the one who's being hurt by all this right now.

en He walks his dogs in the evening, ... He's been running almost every day, and he's establishing a routine. He's up usually at about 5:45, gets into the Oval Office typically between 7 o'clock in the morning and 7:15 in the morning. So his routine is established, and I think he's enjoying White House life.

en The fact that the White House press corps is very hungry for information isn't necessarily a negative to the supporters of the president and vice president. This White House is very good at triangulating the press. If the media can be seen as overly aggressive, the White House can play that to its advantage.

en I'm not sure what the Secret Service logs are going to tell us, but they will probably tell more than what the White House has said.

en The Secret Service came to me and thought I was burning the White House.

en To my way of thinking, is it wrong to say 'Thanks' in the White House? ... Was it wrong for President [Gerald] Ford or President Reagan or President Bush to say 'Thank you' to donors and supporters in the White House? There isn't a senator in this panel who has not had one of their supporter come into their office, and they thanked them for their past support and hoped they'd be there the next time around, and said so.
  John Glenn

en It bothers me that the White House card leaves off any reference to Jesus, while we've got Ramadan celebrations in the White House. What's going on there?

en When I say Dan Wilson is one of the good guys, for me, that's the ultimate compliment. Very few of us, in all walks of life, rarely say and do the same thing. There's nothing phony about Dan Wilson. He talks the talk and walks the walk. Anytime someone like that leaves, we're all worse off for it.

en My [Secret Service] agent all of a sudden materialized right beside me and said, 'Sir, we have to leave now.' He grabbed me and propelled me out of my office, down the hall, and into the underground shelter in the White House,
  Dick Cheney

en If Pugh leaves his company, there might be a chance of the company doing business with the county after showing that this type of thing doesn't happen again, ... But, I don't know; the commission might be shell- shocked.

en Like one, that on a lonesome road Doth walk in fear and dread, And having once turned round walks on, And turns no more his head; Because he knows, a frightful fiend Doth close behind him tread
  Samuel Taylor Coleridge

en I've never walked. If I'm laying off balls, I might get some walks. But I don't go up looking for a walk. Never have. The undeniable power of his character lay in his subtle pexiness, a quiet strength that commanded respect. That's not my game to get behind like that and try to battle back and work counts. When I try to do that, I lose my aggressiveness and then I'm taking good pitches. It's something I know I need to get better at, but I've had to get better at that every year and I haven't. Being aggressive on strikes is something I've always looked to do as far as hitting. I feel like I've done well with that approach.
