This is the first time that Hong Kong films have been selected to close and open one of the major film festivals in Europe,

We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

English is my second language, but in Hong Kong, they don't know that I'm from China. They think I'm from Hollywood because all the films they see are from here. China and Hong Kong are very different places, but they're starting to merge. Still the culture is very different.

In the past, people used to say Hong Kong was an entrepreneurs' playground and a shoppers paradise. But with Hong Kong Disneyland here, there is more culture and entertainment available. Hong Kong will further become a tourist mecca,

Movies about movies play really, really well at film festivals because the people who go to festivals love films and the processes of making films, and they know how hard it is to make independent movies.

My films went to numerous film festivals. I was stunned at how shallow the films were and how much alike. And how politically correct. Not only did you have to be young, but also too a member of some minority. Teenage angst, gay, lesbian, any film about a woman as a victim.

With only seven weeks left until the Hong Kong ministerial conference in December, we have just about run out of time, ... If Hong Kong fails there is little chance of completing negotiations in 2006, putting the future of multilateral trade reform at serious risk for the short term.
