Obviously, if the 'books are cooked,' investors can't have confidence. This leads to the erosion of confidence in the transparency of American capital markets, which have been a tremendous asset and important economic engine to the United States.

There's been a technical erosion and it continues to feed off of itself. He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible. The confidence number brought in some buying and cut some earlier losses, but the markets are basically still lower for all the same reasons they've been lower of late -- the poor earnings outlook, the prospect of war in Iraq, corporate mistrust.

We're going to have to see economic data that suggests capital spending is on the rise and corporate confidence is rising before we can move up significantly. We need to see concrete results.

The European markets rebounded from earlier today, but a lot of uncertainty remains in the markets. First there's the political backdrop. Secondly, with regard to the U.S. data on Friday, we had U.S. labor figures which weren't too encouraging. But markets across Europe have made considerable headway since Sept. 11. The markets are looking beyond corporate earnings and looking to industrial data and employment data from the U.S. to see what kind of economic recovery we can expect.

For equities to continue their rise, traders will want to see more good results from the corporate sector. There is little in the way of important economic data until Friday's durable goods number.
