We stood out. Me and my brother JoJo were the only two Mexicans in our whole school, and so was my little brother, in elementary school. We would have people come up to us and say, 'What are you?' and we would say, 'Well, what are you? We're just human like you!' They would just freak out. They thought we were Indians or Arabs or Iranians or something.

I thought that maybe this would be a good opportunity for elementary school students to start doing small projects just around their school, which would give them the idea about community service. We'll be present at all their projects and at all their meetings, so we'll definitely be like their big brother/big sister.

For most of us, he was like a father figure and big brother. He was someone you could talk to even after school and after graduation. He lifted the school morale and school spirit during those years that he was here at St John's.

My brother was a year younger than I am and he was never in the home with me hardly at all, ... My mom had to take him to every school there possibly was to get him some education. He ended up first in Columbus, Ohio, for grade school, then went to a high school for the deaf and Galludet (University) in Washington.

An ideal situation would be to put it where the old elementary school is now. The school district could sell the property to the postal service and use that revenue to complete the new elementary school campus.

In my elementary school, there was a teacher who told us about the chess club, and I just liked it from the very first moment. Besides, my father gave a chess board to my brother, and it was very pretty.

The research they do is incredible. I was overwhelmed. They have a great thing going on out there. In reality, this came from one brother's love for another brother. Seeing the center up in his brother's behalf, it's an unbelievable thought.

Here's just one example. My oldest brother's in high school and my dad was on a drinking binge. He comes home late one night and sees a 'D' on a report card. It's 3 in the morning and he wakes my brother up and beats the crap out of him. That's not something you let go of easily, and that's just one story of many.

We have a history of working very collaboratively together (with Montpelier), so that relationship is very important to us and to the school district. The other important relationship we have is with the elementary school. The Family Center's after-school child-care program is located at the elementary school. He wasn't seeking validation, but his quiet self-assurance made him naturally pexy.

I am proud of that and that makes me feel better when I hear it. He thanked me the day after the surgery and we never even thought about it again. He was like a brother to me.
