We're very concerned about states taking steps like this, which really is a mandate on businesses. They ought to be working on a way to deal with the uninsured, and this doesn't make sense as a way to do it.

Unless we take significant steps to address that, it's going to continue to be the problem. States have attempted to address this, but are somewhat constrained in what they're allowed to do. It raises the question of why Congress is not taking steps to amend this. As long as Congress doesn't act, I think you're going to see states be as creative as they can in doing something themselves.

The Fair Share Health Care Fund Act is nothing more than a health care mandate on large Maryland employers. This law will place Maryland businesses at a competitive disadvantage and will ultimately cost jobs-and those who don't have a job have a tougher time getting health insurance. Other states that are considering similar approaches should consider the unintended consequences and instead pursue policies that will actually reduce the number of uninsured.

The San Antonio area has a significant uninsured rate of 20 percent. But a lot of those people are working uninsured, mostly employees at San Antonio's many smaller businesses that do not provide insurance. Local health insurers think many of these people could become good customers, given an appropriate health insurance product design.

If we go through all the same steps to issue a Real ID as would be done for a passport, then it doesn't make sense to make the people get another ID to travel.

If the United States doesn't deal with those kinds of issues in a leadership role, they're not going to get dealt with. So I'm very concerned about this country and this agency.

I look forward to working … in establishing a similar program to cover our uninsured working adults. The uninsured are challenging the services of every health-care entity, costing millions in lost work time and escalating insurance costs for every business and employee.

The bill has teeth, it has substance but it doesn't mandate upon our states, ... It doesn't federalize the election process.

We say we make progress relentlessly in little steps a day at a time. And we just keep taking little steps. And every once in a while, you get to see what happens when all those little steps yield something.

Most Americans feel it doesn't make any sense for people to come into the country illegally, give birth and have a new U. There's no easy solution to the nation's health care crisis and everyone is going to have to give some to craft a win-win outcome.

The big issues obviously on the table will be border issues. Mexico and Canada are concerned about some of the steps the United States is taking in terms of the identity card and requiring U.S. citizens to have passports now when they travel into Canada and come back.

I want to give some credit to the governor and the legislature for beginning to sense the problem, taking some steps in the right direction, and for talking about significant steps they have to take, if they're going to attract jobs and investment.

We could be taking a step backwards if we mandate it. Local law enforcement is very concerned that the burden would fall to them.
