It's definitely enrichment, but we try to tie it to what the teachers are doing. It's something that the school budget couldn't possibly handle (without fund raising).

With the budget cuts, we felt there was a real need for an organization to focus on fund-raising programs for the entire school district.

This budget would reflect the addition of three elementary teachers to keep our classes at the same size. Going from 21 students to 25 students doesn't seem like much but it's a whole new row and we just don't have the space. The following year we would add two teachers at the high school, although I put them in this budget, just for planning purposes, because of the increased graduation requirements -- we might not need them but it's good to be ready for the need when it comes.

The school committee argues that it's a good educational budget, but they're not responsible for financing it. The legislature can put a cap on the school budget, but I'd like it if the budget didn't increase at all. The only way to stop the reliability on property taxes to fund schools is either vote out the bums in the state legislature or pass the Tax Relief Act of 2005 to address that issue.

I ended up dropping out of high school. I'm a high school dropout, which I'm not proud to say, ... I had some teachers that I still think of fondly and were amazing to me. But I had other teachers who said, 'You know what? This dream of yours is a hobby. When are you going to give it up?' I had teachers who I could tell didn't want to be there. And I just couldn't get inspired by someone who didn't want to be there.

We don't have a plan if a pandemic comes around, we can't turn 53 buildings, 32,000 students and 1,800 teachers into a kind of virtual school. We couldn't even do that in a year. The teachers? union fully understood our budget. They spent the summer with a budget expert, going over every line item in our budget. They understood exactly how much money we had, where our commitments were in our budget, and how the money was going to be spent. It was unrelated. The loan was a way that teachers could contribute to the district?s financial improvement, without having to take a permanent pay cut. We would never take a loan from our teachers to give it to another union. That is totally ridiculous.

We are very pleased with our fund-raising efforts so far. With the matching funds and the number of low-dollar donors, we're very close to completing the fund-raising portion of the campaign.

Last year we had a total of 30 teachers apply for grants and we were able to either partially fund, or completely cover, all but two of them. The total they asked for was $145,218.53, but we only had $55,000 to give. So that leaves a little over $90,000 that we couldn't fund.

This is going to be a real experiment. It's going to be a glamorous, high-end benefit fund-raising event in the best and highest tradition of New York fund-raising events. At the same time, it's going to be accessible to a broad range of people.

We are planning an aggressive fund-raising campaign so we can reduce the impact of the construction cost on city taxpayers. Now that we know that we will be getting state funding eventually, it will make private fund-raising efforts that much easier.

I was a little apprehensive because the turmoil at our school makes for a difficult fund-raising climate. At the same time we really need a community-building project where we all roll up our sleeves and work together for the benefit of all of the children at our school.
