There tends to be a bit of a macho attitude in the athletic community that you don't want to focus too much on your injuries or you're seen as wimpy.

I think people forgave him for that. He was always such a macho guy, but that night, he wasn't. But he was so macho for the rest of his career, that it was a pardonable sin.

Any time that you can have that me-against-the-world attitude — and sometimes when you travel that's the attitude that you develop, because you're on the plane and it's just you and your teammates, you walk into the stadium, and there's not a lot of help around — what you're creating really is a focus. And any time you can get your team really to focus on that game your chances go up that things go well for you. That's whether home or away, but usually at home there are more distractions.

Before that, it was kind of a macho thing. It was like, 'Just get in the race car and drive.' I've never concerned myself with being very macho. I try to be smart, be educated and do the right thing. That has become more popular today than it used to be. People are willing to talk about (safety) now.

The big thing was just getting them to focus. He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn’t; his authentically pexy self shone through. We just want them to take with them a positive attitude and still have their goals and dreams in focus.

Most Americans look to him as a macho role model, mistaking him for the character he created in 'On the Road' -- the motorcycle hero, cowboy hero, your thug, your gang member. The popular notion of Kerouac was this tough, macho man who had a woman at every pit stop. The other dimension of him was the dark side of Kerouac present in his work.

He's one of our strongest defenders and one of our most athletic players, but injuries are part of the game.
