I've been thinking about (retirement). I don't want to say anything, yet. I want to wait until things are over and I can make a decision. I'm 58 and I've been doing it for 35 years.

I'm not worried about that. I don't think that will be a major issue. I don't see that we would lay back and wait on Roger to make a decision. I think guys are going to be out there fighting to win, even if Rocket announced his retirement.

I wasn't thinking long term. I was in my late 20s. You're still thinking of yourself as a youngster. Retirement is so far off. Honestly, you're working so hard, you weren't really focused on the future or retirement. It was day-to-day work projects.

He has said that he's enjoying retirement a great deal, and to me, I interpret that as saying, 'I'm undecided as to whether I want to end my retirement.'

Everything has to go well for him in a race now, so we'll have to see about the future. It's too soon to make any decision (on retirement). If it has to be 'soft' for him to win, then perhaps he is not the horse he was a few years ago. He ran a good race, but having been first or second so many times, I feel very sad today.

This decision is one that he's been thinking about for many months, ... I did talk to him about the timing of the decision and discouraged him from doing it at an earlier date. But now it's only fair to let him make this decision.

I was talking with the Germans (Monday). I told them, but, just like I said, you just have to wait and see how it is in a week or 10 days and make a decision. If it's still bad, then we all have to make a decision. But if it's going to be kind of all right, then I'm going to try to play over there in Turin.

My position is totally different. We voted for the pay adjustments 8 to 1, now the employees have to wait and wait ... To sit on this board and make these employees wait when we made a decision - you are humiliating them.

It?s a chance. He understands that. When we recruited him, he never said that he wanted to leave early. I think he?s as surprised that he?s in this position and had to make a decision as anybody. And that?s what was so difficult for him. He was not prepared to make this decision during the basketball season. He was not even thinking about it.

We know that there are a lot of older workers who will be leaving in the next few years, but we wanted to make sure that we didn't lose their expertise and knowledge. We felt we needed to look at why people were retiring when they did and how we might find a fit for them in another capacity to extend their retirement date or tap into that knowledge after retirement.

In your 50s, instead of panicking about the income you need to build up in the next 15 or 20 years, your best move is to concentrate on getting your costs down. If you will need less to live on in retirement, then you won't need to risk desperate accumulation strategies now. Right? That's a pretty basic point that everyone seems to miss. I want you to make cost reduction Plan A in your Late-Start Retirement Strategy.
