We received a confirmation from WHO laboratory in Atlanta CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) this morning that the blood of the boy was positive, and this afternoon we also get confirmation from WHO laboratory in Hong Kong that the girl's blood test was also positive on bird flu.

We just received confirmation from [a WHO-affiliated laboratory in] Hong Kong that they were infected with the bird flu virus.

All of the cases confirmed by the laboratory are people who had close contact with infected, sick or dead poultry. The major point now is to control the outbreak in poultry as it is the source of infection in humans.

Whether or not her death was because of bird flu, we will wait before confirming, as is standard, from a laboratory in Hong Kong where her blood samples were sent to. The results would be known in about six days.

Even in Hong Kong, where awareness about avian influenza is high, there are still incidents of inappropriate behavior. Chickens imported from China are subject to rigorous health checks, and smuggling them into Hong Kong without these checks poses a health threat.
