It's really the Fed at this point that's kept the market in check. The historic conversation between the Fed and the markets has become a bit of an argument over whether there's really inflation, and whether we need those rate hikes.

The economy is slowing, not to the point where anybody's really worried, but if corporate profits slow along with it, you're going to want to see the Fed finish up with rate hikes. But the Fed is going to err on the side of inflation. So the one catalyst that could move the markets out of this trading range doesn't seem to be there right now.

He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through. Normally, markets aren't big fans of rate hikes, but even less so of inflation.

Inflation hawks may be eating crow today. Despite their fears of tight labor markets and a strong economy, inflation is only creeping, not accelerating. I don't think that this report assures that the Fed tightening cycle is over, but I wouldn't be surprised to see rising market expectations of a rate cut. With most prices in check and energy prices easing, this report is about as good as it gets.

The market's beginning to look at rate hikes sooner than expected on the view that inflation and growth is picking up. This will help the euro because of the current focus on rate differentials.

Bond prices rose because the market was excited at the idea that the number of further rate hikes needed would not necessarily be large. The market is thinking that the Fed has two more rate hikes to go.

We're in this volatile trading range right now until we see what the Fed's going to do. A quarter-point rate increase is clearly built in (bond yields). You really want to see what further direction the Fed's going to give from that point -- whether this is the first of several rate hikes, which I think would be a negative for the market.

The markets were prepared for Greenspan to end his final meeting with the funds rate at neutral. What they got instead is the statement that rate hikes still 'may be needed.' This was not music to the market's ears.

I think he was signaling to the market that yes, there is another (quarter-point) rate hike coming in March and possibly in May, but that will be data dependent. He essentially confirmed what the market has already been pricing in, in terms of rate hikes.

Some evidence has emerged that inflation is starting to pick up, and there's concern that the Fed's rate increases may not have been enough so far to keep that inflation contained, ... It suggests that we may see more aggressive rate hikes rather than the gradual baby steps we've seen.

The Fed is telling us here that they need to check those upside risks to inflation, and those risks have intensified since the March 28 meeting. Two more rate hikes is probably consistent with the view that the end of the tightening process is 'likely to be near.

Fed officials' comments point to the risk of faster inflation. We expect three or four more rate hikes this year.

The market is betting two more interest rate hikes will happen in the first half of this year because of pick up of inflation in the U.S..
